Paulina Rubio celebrated Mexico’s Independence Day with a show at The Espee in San Antonio on Friday (Sept. 15) night as part of her Golden Hits Tour.
The singer hit the stage a little before 9 p.m. with her 2009 single ‘Causa Y Efecto.’ Despite the Texas heat, she sported a long coat over a sparkling dress looking like a total rockstar to kick off the show. ‘Lo Hare Por Ti’ followed as the second song on a night that showed why she is one of Mexico’s most important pop stars.
While the setlist was nearly identical to the one she had when she last visited San Antonio last year in the Perrisimas Tour alongside Alejandra Guzman, there were still a few surprises here and there. 2016’s collaboration with Morat, ‘Mi Nuevo Vicio,’ was included in the show as well as her promising latest single ‘Propiedad Privada.’ But staying true to the name of the tour, it was songs from her vast catalog that had fans on their feet throughout the entire show.
‘Te Quise Tanto’ and ‘ No Soy Esa Mujer’ kept things rolling early on. While the show was short, clocking in at just a little over one hour, it did what it needed to do. Despite the audience turnout being rather underwhelming, Rubio still put on a show that truly celebrated her career spanning close to three decades.
One of the highlights of the night was a medley that on paper might seem confusing, but comes off nicely when performed. It was ‘Baila Casanova,’ ‘Don’t Say Goodbye,’ (which is one of the most underrated Spanish-to-English crossover singles), and ‘Boys Will Be Boys.’
Meanwhile, the other medley of the night was an ode to Rubio’s time in the group Timbiriche. It included fan-favorites such as ‘Acelerar’ and ‘Con Todos Menos Conmigo,’ as well as ‘Mexico’ – which was a nice touch given the holiday celebrations.
During ‘Dame Otro Tequila,’ Rubio did her own version of El Grito by saluting everything from Latinos living on this side of the border to strong women and her late mother. She then put on a sombrero to match her silver outfit to perform her 2000 hit ‘El Último Adiós’ and Los Tigres Del Norte’s ‘Golpes En El Corazón.’ The latter prompted one of the most passionate singalongs from the crowd.
Her encore consisted of her most-pop material. ‘Ni Una Sola Palabra,’ ‘Sexy Dance,’ and ‘Algo Tienes’ served as the perfect trifecta of energy before wrapping things up with ‘Y Yo Sigo Aqui.’
The Golden Hits Tour continues with stops in Dallas, Las Vegas, and Indio.
