Remember ‘Despacito?’ The Luis Fonsi song was extremely popular in its original version in Latin America. But as soon as Justin Bieber jumped on it, it went global and became one of the biggest songs in history.
This time around, the ‘Peaches’ singer is lending his vocals to Nigeria’s own WizKid. His song ‘Essence’ featuring the lovely Tems has been doing extremely well within fans of Afrobeats. Adding the Biebs to the song will give it some well-needed exposure.
‘Essence’ garnered attention on its own over the summer despite being released in October 2020. It reached the top spot of the Billboard World Digital Song Sales and U.K.’s Afrobeats Singles charts. On the famed Billboard Hot 100, it peaked at 54. It would not be surprising to see the steamy song reach new heights with the addition of Bieber.
Justin referred to the song as ‘the song of the summer.’ Earlier today, WizKid became the first African act to be nominated for a MTV Video Music Award.
