Mariah Carey sat down for an interview with Vulture ahead of the release of her first memoir, The Meaning Of Mariah. During the interview, she broke her silence on her appearance on The Ellen Show back in 2008 – where the Ellen DeGeneres kept pressuring her about whether or not she was pregnant at the time.
Ellen, who has come under scrutiny lately for allegedly mistreating employees, brought out champagne to the set during her interview with Carey to prove if the singer was pregnant or not. Turns out Carey had a miscarriage which is why she tried to her best not to answer the question.
Carey said the following about her appearance on Ellen:
“I was extremely uncomfortable with that moment is all I can say. And I really have had a hard time grappling with the aftermath. I wasn’t ready to tell anyone because I had had a miscarriage. I don’t want to throw anyone that’s already being thrown under any proverbial bus, but I didn’t enjoy that moment.
There is an empathy that can be applied to those moments that I would have liked to have been implemented. But what am I supposed to do? It’s like, [sings] ‘What are you going to do?’”
Ellen has yet to comment on that instance. Since that interview in 2008, Carey has continued to make appearances on The Ellen Show throughout the years. In the host’s defense, she obviously didn’t know the situation surrounding the singer’s pregnancy at the time. Wouldn’t that be something you discuss prior to going out for the interview?
