Ariana Grande Brings Out ‘NSYNC, Diddy, Mase, & A Crying-Upset Nicki Minaj At Coachella

The anticipation is finally over, and Ariana Grande took the stage as the youngest headliner at Coachella last night. It was a long set composed of some of her hits as well as some B-sides, mostly from her last two albums Sweetener and thank u, next. On top of that, there was a lot of special guests brought out on stage.

The first guests were *NSYNC minus Justin Timberlake. They joined Ariana during her song ‘Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored’ which samples their song ‘Makes Me Ill.’ So naturally, they did mash it up a little bit. Then, choreo and all, Grande performed their hit ‘Tearin’ Up My Heart’ to a huge pop from the crowd. Can we talk about how amazing JC Chasez was? OMG.

Later in the set one of Grande’s BFFs, Nicki Minaj, joined her to do her verses on ‘Side To Side’ and ‘Bang Bang.’ Unfortunately, there were some clear technical malfunctions – and maybe something else? Minaj was not on top of her game, visibly mad. She did not seem happy to be on stage at all as much as Grande tried to make it work.

As soon as Minaj got off stage, she was spotted by some fans crying. 😕 Who knows what’s really going on there, right?

The most unexpected of guests, however, were Diddy and Mase. They joined her to tribute The Notorious B.I.G. as they performed ‘Mo Money Mo Problems.’ It was nice, but I just didn’t get why they were there to do that.

I love Ariana and her songs, and I am looking forward to seeing her on her on going Sweetener Tour (for which most of the show was exactly that last night). However, I was kind of disappointed with her Coachella performance. I know that she had big shoes to fill following Lady Gaga two years ago and the show-stopping Beyonce last year. The show just felt bland and the energy dipped at times. A lot of her songs just don’t seem to be right for a Sunday night headliner gig at one of the biggest music festivals in the world.

One other thing that was kind of a bummer was that she had to rush the last few songs – a.k.a. her biggest hits. The unnecessary amount of special guests (which seemed to be a trend throughout the weekend right? SO MANY) lead to her kind of rushing through ‘Into You,’ ‘Dangerous Woman,’ ‘Break Free,’ ‘No Tears Left To Cry,’ and ‘thank u, next.’

I also wouldn’t have closed the show with ‘thank u, next.’ It’s a bit anti-climatic to close such a big show.

Can’t wait to see what weekend two has in store for Ariana at Coachella!
